Can you get lash extensions while you are pregnant?

Lash extensions and pregnancy

Are lash extensions safe for pregnant women? The answer is yes, but there is some risk and some modification required. Pregnancy may limit the medications you can take in case of a severe allergic reaction. If you are beyond the first trimester, you will not be able to lie on your back for the appointment.

Allergic reactions can occur to anyone at any time. Even if you have been wearing lashes for years, it’s possible to develop an allergy during your pregnancy. An allergic reaction can range from mild to severe. It’s important to consider what effect a severe reaction would have on your pregnancy as well as what medications would be available to you if one does occur.

During the second and third trimesters, expecting mothers should avoid lying flat on their back for more than a few minutes. In this position, the weight from the uterus can compress a major blood vessel called the vena cava. This interferes with the flow of blood to your baby. It can also cause you to experience dizziness, shortness of breath, and an increased heart rate. For this reason, during a lash appointment you should lie on your side with your head turned up. This can be uncomfortable, especially later in the pregnancy, as appointments are typically 1 - 2 hours.

If you choose to continue getting lash extensions while you are pregnant, it’s important to speak to your doctor first about the possibility of an allergic reaction and what treatments would be available to you in the event that you have one. A doctor’s note clearing you for lash extensions may be required by some lash artists or studios.

Your hair growth cycles will change during and after pregnancy. During pregnancy your lashes will spend more time in their growth phase and you will likely notice your lash extensions lasting longer. After your pregnancy, you’ll notice an increase in shedding of your hair and lashes. This growth cycle can take several months to get back on track, so be prepared for a frustrating but very normal period of hair loss and poor lash retention.

You may need to schedule regular fills every 2 weeks during this time or opt for the longer lasting lash lift and tint instead.
